Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Region

A model region for sustainable development

The Berchtesgadener Land in southeastern Upper Bavaria has been designated a biosphere reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The area of the biosphere reserve is identical to that of the Berchtesgadener Land district. It is the only biosphere in Germany that covers both alpine and pre-alpine habitats. Biosphere reserves are characterized by particularly intact natural and cultural landscapes and their typical biological diversity. A biosphere reserve is also an area for living, business, culture and recreation. It stands for a balanced coexistence of man and nature and aims to promote the social and economic development of the region in harmony with nature. The basis for this is the UNESCO program “Man and the Biosphere”, currently valid is the Lima Action Plan.

Biosphere Region – what is that?

A unique region

Our Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Region – breathtaking scenery with its own distinctive features! Our biosphere extends from the rugged high mountains to the gentle foothills of the Alps – this is unique in Germany. The core zone is protected by Germany’s only alpine national park. Outside the national park, the focus is on people and the sustainable development of our working and living environment. We know how important it is to actively preserve the beauty and diversity of our region and to shape the future in an innovative way.

Our events

The Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Region offers numerous excursions, workshops and lectures for families and adults focusing on environmental and sustainability topics. Nature and Landscape

In a biosphere reserve, characteristic and intact landscapes are to be preserved and developed along with their biological diversity. This is why the improvement of habitats to protect their natural functions and the native flora and fauna is a special focus. Within the traditional cultural landscape, this is achieved through active shaping and sustainable forms of use. In the core zone of the Biosphere Region, nature is allowed to unfold its own dynamics and develop natural or close-to-natural ecosystems.

Sustainable Life and Economy

A biosphere is a habitat. In relation to humans, we can speak of a space for living, for economic activity and for recreation. It is important to preserve this area for future generations in a sustainable and livable way. We can achieve this by balancing economic, ecological and social concerns and by ensuring economic development, an intact environment with fundamental natural resources, as well as harmonious coexistence.

Creating Awareness

In a Biosphere Region, people are to be enabled and supported in acting sustainably. Essential for this is an adequate awareness, which is created through knowledge and knowledge exchange, the visualization and communication of sustainable topics, as well as hands-on experience or the collective development of possible solutions. The enthusiasm and motivation to act sustainably support people to become active together.
